Welp. Today’s the day, folks. For the first-ever Fingers open discussion thread, I want to know: are you planning to get drunk tonight as you watch the election results roll in? What’s the plan: a Zoom call with family, or a “party” with your housemates/social pod? Have you picked your poison yet? Inquiring minds (your Fingers editor) would like to know. See you in the comments, and regardless of what/whether you’re drinking, stay safe out there.
Hello and welcome to the Fingers election day/night open thread! I'm dead sober and drinking coffee at the moment. For my part—and this is subject to change without notice of course—I'm planning to have a few drinks this evening while hanging out at the backyard election "party" of a friend who is running for a seat in the South Carolina state legislature. Gonna try to stick with beer, with the assumption that we're going to see this thing drag out for the next few days/weeks and there's no need to completely incapacitate myself on Night #1 of Our (Next) National Nightmare.
I think I've hit the wall in terms of any more real productivity? My usual quitting time is about 2 hours from now, but I really have nothing left. However... we have a pretty full fridge (which is standard). My husband bought a 12pack of Two Hearted the other day and called it Election Night supplies but he seems to have drunk most of it. I grabbed an extra bottle of wine on Sunday. Probably gonna fix a martini in like half an hour? This feels like a really weird day so I'm not entirely sure how to proceed.
We specifically bought a bottle of champagne in 2016 earlier in the day, and obviously didn't open it when things became more apparent. I saved it thinking it would be impeachment champagne, but when that seemed unlikely, I drank it the day the RBG beer release I planned at Sam Adams went viral (when she was still alive and I was still employed there) because I figured it had pissed off enough Trumpers to be a symbolic victory.
I wasn't planning to have a drink until after dinner AT LEAST but it's really nice in Charleston today so now my wife and I are drinking some chilled red and watching the sun set (at 5:10pm, ugh daylight savings time!) down south.
Oh, this martini had neither dignity nor respect. But it was good. Just threw a batch of cookie dough together for either celebration or comfort later.
Gonna try to maintain the discipline to avoid the discourse by not drinking. If the discourse finds me, probably drinking. Hoping for relief drinking snobby local beers later in the week rather than all consuming dread drinking rittenhouse
On a night like tonight there's a direct relationship between how much time the Twitter app is open on my phone and how much brown liquor I pour down my throat. One day, the discourse comes for us all.
Hey Dave, Glawe here. I ordered some Orendain tequila from Jalisco and some chuchupaste root from a hippie on Etsy to make my own chucho, but I'm going to try to hold off on that stuff until tomorrow night. Tonight will be Manhattans followed by beer.
Definitely drinking but not during the daytime. It will be later in the week until the results are finalizing so will progressively step up our game as the week grows longer.
Seems downright reasonable to me. Honestly cannot imagine what it would be like going through this with even a single solitary child, so godspeed to you man.
I will be drinking but have no specific itinerary - as a side note, is this the hardest event to prepare for in the exciting arena of poisoning yourself willingly? There are only wisps of indication at what kind of drinking you're going to want to do. Wedding = happy drinking. Funeral /got dumped = sad drinking. Even sports games where there's the chance your team loses, the drinking still carries the specter of fun. The massive standard deviation of what type of drinking might be necessary this week makes this a real paradox even for experienced degenerates.
It's a really good point. I remember in 2016 I drank... uh... "most of" a fifth of Rittenhouse rye watching the results roll in. I didn't have any celebration drinks planned because a) I was by myself and b) I wasn't terribly stoked about Hillary lol, but if you're the sort of person who drinks different beverages based on emotional state, this is a tough night for that!

one of the voting in person traditions i'm missing this year is taking a beer with me to the booth
Did you drink it in line, or in the booth itself? What's your method and vessel of choice?
just a can or bottle in a koozie. polling place is a couple blocks away so drink it on the walk, while in line and voting, and on the walk back.

Lotta Jaime Harrison signs out in Charleston County, at least. As my pal Paul Bowers of Brutal South put it the other day, hope for everything, expect nothing: https://brutalsouth.substack.com/p/hope-for-everything-expect-nothing

Got any cookie dough left? Pls send some if so

Orendain, eh? *extremely Johnny Dio voice* "An aristocrat!" Since you're too coy to do it yourself I'm going to link to your (very good) story about chucho here so other Friends of Fingers can read it. https://heated.medium.com/why-i-love-this-city-where-americans-arent-welcome-8c681d88023d

Day-drinking, absolutely not. The horror. But that begs the question: when do you think you'll fix your first drink this afternoon/evening?
Workday and one of the kids is zoom/ home-learning so being as responsible as possible. I'll give it until 630pm.

I digress - Fernet if good, Jameson if bad.
