"A number of deliberate steps"

It's your Fingers Buzzwords of The Week!

That big whooshing noise you heard this week was the whirlwind of press releases pouring forth from the smoking crater where Republic National Distributing Company used to be. The penultimate unraveling of what had been the country’s second-largest wine and spirits distributor has been cause for some truly tremendous euphemizing, but for my money, no one met the moment (derogatory) more than its chief executive, Marc Sachs. In his memo to employees Monday, he wrote:

When I stepped into this role, I was asked to help stabilize the company and determine the best path forward for RNDC. Over the past few months, we have taken a number of deliberate steps to establish this path and achieve the best possible outcome for our customers, suppliers, and—most importantly—our associates.

Everybody knows that when a multibillion-dollar company enters a firesale after years of mismanagement, the wellbeing of its employees is the first thing to be sacrificed at the altar of distressed assets. But what Sachs’ memo presupposes is: what if it wasn’t? (It is.)
